David is a writer, scientist, educator and photographer who teaches environmental studies in the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program at Dartmouth College. Previously, he was an adjunct faculty member at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine, where he taught environmental studies.
David is author of the acclaimed Storied Waters – 35 Fabled Fly-Fishing Destinations and the Writers & Artists Who Made Them Famous (Stackpole Books, 2019), which chronicles a six-week, 5000 mile adventure to fly fish in rivers and ponds mentioned in literature. In 2016, he published The Confluence- A Collection of Essays, Art & Tall Tales about Fly-fishing & Friendship, written with six classmates from college about their 30+ years of fishing adventures in the backcountry of northern New Hampshire. He administers the annual Robert Traver Fly-fishing Writing Award on behalf of the John D. Voelker Foundation and the American Museum of Fly Fishing. David is lead editor for an anthology of twenty award-winning stories titled Trout Do Not Lie forthcoming from Stackpole Books in November 2026.
For ten years, David wrote a monthly column for The Maine Sportsman magazine. His writing has also appeared Northern Woodlands magazine, the Maine Sunday Telegram, Dartmouth Alumni Magazine, and The American Fly Fisher, Journal of the American Museum of Fly Fishing.
David earned at BA from Dartmouth College in environmental sciences. He completed a year of graduate studies at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and earned his Master of Engineering Sciences from the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth.
David worked for 30+ years as an environmental professional in government, business & consulting. He was elected to the Maine House of Representatives as a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Utilities and Energy. He also was the Director of the Bureau of Land & Water Quality at Maine Department of Environmental Studies.
