David Van Wie is a writer and lecturer in environmental journalism at Dartmouth College. Prior to his time teaching in MALS, he was an adjunct faculty member at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine, where he taught environmental studies.
David's newest book is called "Storied Waters – 35 Fabled Fly Fishing Destinations and the Writers & Artists Who Made Them Famous" (Stackpole Books, 2019), which chronicles a six week, 5000 mile adventure he took in 2017 to fly fish in rivers and ponds mentioned in literature. In 2016, he published The Confluence- A Collection of Essays, Art & Tall Tales about Fly-fishing & Friendship, written with six classmates from college about their 20+ years of fishing adventures in backcountry of northern New Hampshire.
David writes a monthly column for The Maine Sportsman magazine, called 'The Sporting Environment' His writing has also appeared Northern Woodlands magazine, the Maine Sunday Telegram, Dartmouth Alumni Magazine, and The American Fly Fisher, Journal of the American Museum of Fly Fishing.
David Van Wie lives in Lyme, New Hampshire after living in Maine for over 30 years. He grew up in rural upstate New York before graduating from Dartmouth College. He completed graduate studies at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and earned his Master of Engineering Sciences from the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth. David worked for 30+ years as an environmental professional in government, business & consulting. He was a senior principal scientist at Amec Foster Wheeler (previously MACTEC) where he worked for 11 years. During that time, he was elected to the Maine House of Representatives as a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Utilities and Energy. Previously, he was the Director of the Bureau of Land & Water Quality at Maine Department of Environmental Studies. He also worked for six years at Central Maine Power Company and before that for the US Forest Service in Cody, Wyoming.
