Matthew Sturdevant, MALS '08 Honored in Recent Publication

An article written by Matthew Sturdevant, MALS '08 has been recognized in the latest publication by Ken Tingley.

An article written by Matthew Sturdevant, MALS '08, which explores the experience of LGBTQ+ individuals who grew up in the rural North Country of New York State, has been recognized in the latest publication by Ken Tingley.

"The Last American Newspaper" is a collection of stories covered by reporters of The Post Star in Glens Falls, N.Y., and celebrates the battle that is investigative journalism in small-town America. Chapter 5 of Tingley's text explores Sturdevant's article, "Growing Up Gay," which the author describes as a "feat of journalism that took months of reporting, and was published at a time when California was still under Proposition 22 (March 2000), which defined marriage as between a man and a woman." The strong reactions that followed the article's publication highlight the central purpose of Tingley's book: to demonstrate how/why the work of writers operating in small towns is both inspirational and necessary, as they are often the watchdogs of a community.

Sturdevant tells our office that, "although this article was written before I attended the MALS program at Dartmouth, the MALS program refined me into the writer I am today." Congratulations to Matthew for this great honor!
