Edmund Burke is often seen as the founding father of modern conservatism. How is his “conservatism” similar to or different from what we call conservatism in our own time? Prof. Gregory M. Collins—Lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Program on Ethics, Politics, and Economics at Yale—is well placed to address this question. An award-winning teacher and scholar, his research ranges widely over the origins of liberalism and conservatism. His book Commerce and Manners in Edmund Burke’s Political Economy appeared with Cambridge in 2020, and his book on the idea of civil society in early African-American political thought will appear in February, 2027.
