The Department of History welcomes guest professor Katherine Grandjean (Wellesley College) to present a lecture on her recent monograph, Kingdom of Devils: A Tale of Murder in the Shadow of the American Revolution (Random House, 2026).

Kingdom of Devils tells the story of a brutal series of murders on the Revolutionary frontier. In the late 1790s, brothers Wiley and Micajah Harp killed dozens of people in the borderlands of Kentucky and Tennessee. No one has ever really explained why they did it. Drawing from her research, Grandjean uses the Harp murders to reveal the dark side of the young United States’ independence. Unspooling the mystery of the Harps’ spree, this talk exposes the hidden, violent legacies of the revolutionary era.

Katherine Grandjean is Associate Professor of History at Wellesley College. The recipient of major research fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, and American Antiquarian Society, among others, she is also the author of American Passage (Harvard, 2015).
