IMAGINING QUEER KOREAN AMERICA: A NIGHT WITH FILMMAKER ANDREW AHN

Spa Night follows David (Joe Seo), a closeted Korean American teenager, as he explores his sexuality, his racialized position, and his relationship to his immigrant family. Set in a Korean spa in Los Angeles’ Koreatown, Spa Night wrestles with the overlapping formations of gender, sexuality, and race as they play out across both individual bodies and geographies of urban transformation and gentrification. Written and directed by Andrew Ahn, the film competed at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, and actor Joe Seo won the Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Prize for Breakthrough Performance. The film screening will be followed by a Q&A withSpa Night’s writer and director, Andrew Ahn. This event is co-sponsored by the English department, the WGSS program, the Film & Media department, the Leslie Center for the Humanities, and the Provost’s Fellowship program.
